There is something about the idea of a cupcake that brings stirs the senses. Not only does it titillate one's taste buds, but the tiny shape and idea of a small, beautiful cake is brilliant in and of itself. The cupcake brings back memories of childhood parties, when all the children would have remarkable shades of frosting shadowing their mouths and overstuffed gift bags with donkeys and clowns on them. Young girls had a fondness for baking miniature items and even did so in miniature oven--hence, the "EZ Bake Oven." Cupcakes in modern day have become iconic--they are served with champagne or milk--they can be childlike or sexy. The petite cakes are both cute and delicious, while being a lusciously sexy mini dessert at the same time.
In "Little Miss Cupcake," De La Nuez explores this fascination with the iconic cupcake, the beauty of it and the nostalgic childhood connection. He does it through the main character, "Little Miss Cupcake," who appears to be the child in all of us who never grows up--she symbolizes the one who remembers having the beautiful cupcakes at her parties while wearing her crown for the day of her birthday. The angels above symbolize the innocence of childhood and protecting the youthful quality in us all. So, grab a cupcake, close your eyes and as the soft, fluffy, sweet frosting hits your lips, remember that you never really grow up. Little Miss Cupcake said so.
